We all know that time is important and we especially don’t like when other people waste our time. So why do we think that it’s ok for us to waste our own time?? It’s quite counter-intuitive to have a To Do list that you spend time to create and then fail to efficiently execute it. We all experience busy days, especially if you’re a busy entrepreneur. So let’s discuss Time Mapping. Essentially this is a journal of tasks and activities, each laden with time stamps. So as you detail a task, you put the time it takes to execute it, thereby giving you a more accurate depiction of your time and productive you are.
This journalling is mapped out for around 1-4 weeks. Once this is done, you will now have an idea as to what task(s) takes up the most time and where you are wasting time. Time journalling is helpful if you know you have a problem sticking to and completing a task in a timely fashion. Find out what is highest on your list that takes the most time and is the most productive. Then find what is least productive and takes up equally the most amount of time. Then further break down each subsequent task according to importance and time.
I find that its best if we colour code each task according to execution time frame. RED, ORANGE AND GREEN. Red meaning that it takes up over 2 hours or more of your time. Orange is 1-2 hours and Green means you can complete in less than an 30 minutes to an hour. Now when you have a visual map, it makes things easier for you to see the bigger picture, instead of just writing down tasks you hope to accomplish.
Nothing fancy is needed to start, simple pen, book and highlighters will do the trick, unless of course you want to get techy with it, then there are apps for that or even a spreadsheet. Think of Time Mapping as your own project management execution line up. Almost like a Gantt chart. Only difference is that it’s all about your precious commodity-YOUR TIME. You have control over how you spend your time. So let’s create a more time bound visual, that will guide you to be more efficient and get more out of your day.
